Adobe Air: Broadening Your Design Arsenal.

adobeair_screen.pngRecently Adobe’s little application building platform Air made the jump from testing project to a full fledged platform. Shortly after, I decided to try it out. I already knew of a program or two running on the Air platform, namely the Kuler widget, also by Adobe.

Thus far the platform seems to hold its own and seems to work very well for applications that are specific to one or two tasks. With this in mind I believe the Adobe Air platform can and will, in the future be a great asset to designers who wish to enlist it into their arsenal.

Currently the offerings from Air are still few. However, it is still a new platform so don’t let that sway you from it. A few of the applications you can currently pick up for the shockingly low price of free to help you along your creative path are:

Adobe’s Kuler Desktop

A great tool for help with color inspiration. Users signed up with the Adobes online Kuler service create color combinations and save them as swatch palettes. The palettes are then aggregated to the Kuler Desktop client where you can use them as reference, turn them into swatches for Illustrator, or just look at all the ways various people can mix color.

StudioCloud PSG

This is a nice app for those who do professional photography and run their own studio. StudioCloud PSG allows photographers desktop access to the StudioCloud online studio solution. Photographers can run photo proofing, do sales and manage online galleries all from the desktop. This is a very useful tool for anyone using the StudioCloud services.

WebKut

WebKut is an application that could prove very useful to bloggers or those who take a lot of screen shots from the web. WebKut is a simple application and allows users 3 capture options: the entire page, the current view, or only a selection.

Many more apps and the Air platform itself can be found at http://www.adobe.com/products/air/. Once there, you will also find a download for the Air SDK if you are a developer looking to help create new and exciting applications to support the Air family.
